Hawkeyes Win Three Events

CEDAR FALLS, IA and WALNUT, CA - The University of Iowa men's and women's track and field teams won three events and qualified eight competitors for the NCAA regional meet at the UNI Twilight meet Saturday in Cedar Falls, IA. The Hawkeye women's team also recorded one NCAA provisional qualifier at the 45th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, CA. At UNI, sophomore Dan Haut set a Mark Messersmith outdoor track complex record in the 5,000 meters, winning the event in 15:03.29. Iowa's other two champions were senior Zach Digney in the 200 meters (21.29) and sophomore Adam Hamilton in the hammer throw (202-9). Both were collegiate-best performances. Iowa's regional qualifiers were senior Brad Daufeldt (176-6) and sophomore Tim Brodersen (176-0) in the discus, junior Andy Banse (53-10 1/4), freshman Shane Maier (53-8 1/4) and senior Robby Beyer (51-1 1/2) in the shot put and Hamilton, junior Chris Voller (193-4) and Daufeldt (186-1) in the hammer throw. The Hawkeyes recorded a total of 16 personal-best and 28 season-best performances at the meet. At the Mt. SAC Relays, freshman Nikki Chapple provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 meters with a collegiate-best 35:06.35 for 15th place. Senior Sarah Arens placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:48.85.
The Hawkeye women's team is scheduled to compete in six events Sunday at Mt. SAC. The men's and women's teams next competition will be April 22-24 at the 95th annual Drake Relays in Des Moines.
